Walmart says Project Gigaton goals are on track

May 08, 2019 / Matt Leonard

Walmart was able to reduce its scope one emissions, which are from company-owned sources, and scope two emissions, which are generated by electricity, by 6.1% in 2017 compared to 2015 levels. The company is on track, along with its suppliers, to reduce its emissions by 1 billion metric tons by 2030, the retailer said in its first Environmental, Social & Governance Report released Wednesday. Walmart plans to reduce its scope one and two emissions by 18% compared to 2015 levels by 2025 — the company says it is on track to make this happen. This will be done by making its fleets more fuel-efficient, improving its refrigeration systems and powering 50% of its operations with renewable energy by 2025, the report said.
