Apple's Global Retail Empire

Having opened the first two Apple Stores in May 2001, Apple rapidly ramped up its retail ambitions over the past 15 years. The company currently operates nearly 500 stores across 19 countries generating tens of billions in retail sales every year. According to Deloitte’s “Global Powers of Retailing” report, that puts Apple, a hardware company first, among the Top 50 retailers in the world.Under the leadership of Angela Ahrendts, Apple’s senior vice president of retail and online stores, the company currently implements a new retail strategy, trying to create a relaxed atmosphere for people to get together, learn, work (and buy stuff) at the company’s flagship stores. Our chart illustrates the sprawl of Apple’s retail empire as well as the obvious blind spots outside of developed markets. During last week’s earnings call, CEO Tim Cook mentioned the possibility of opening an Apple Store in India, an important growth market for the iPhone maker.
