Retail in the Future will be as complex and financially challenging as today. It will still be over 90% in brick-and-mortar stores, though the line between the physical and the virtual will blur. The big shift will be the expanded matrix of connections between all the touchpoints of retail, shopper, vendor, and influencer and the speed and depth of data movement across the whole of this new ecosystem.

For digitally native brands, which operate few stores relative to more traditional players, the move to operating exclusively online, in theory, should have come with little disruption to business. But that hasn't been the case. As a whole, direct-to-consumer brand week-over-week spending fell 7% on average between March 2 and March 22. Comparatively, the average week-over-week increase for these brands from Jan. 6 to March 1 was 1%, according to the data.

Pivoting to a DTC business is not a quick fix and for many brands, their own ecommerce sites are just not fit for purpose or the budgets are not available to drive the qualified traffic through to purchase. That inevitably leaves a greater focus on driving sales through third party ecommerce sites. The ecommerce penetration rates vary massively from sector to sector and while they have been growing strongly, they have to date made up a relatively small percentage of online sales. Traditional retail still contributes significantly to the bulk of all purchases.
