Indoor positioning and data analytics company Inpixon has announced they will begin using blockchain to create a global repository of device reputations to help enterprise security and retailers react to rogue-device risk proactively. The company says using blockchain with its Indoor Positioning Analytics platform will reduce risk for retailers by creating a self-managing payment platform that layers device reputation onto account management. It also will reward customers for their loyalty. Blockchain enables rapid ID and quarantine of malicious devices which will help prevent fraudulent transactions, which can cost retailers millions of dollars annually.

How In-Store Brands Are Taking Over In-Store

Article | February 25, 2020

CPG companies have been feeling the pain from store brands for close to a decade now. Increased quality, curated offerings and better graphics have all led shoppers to try and in many cases then switch to the store brand offering. The latest salvo in this war is about data. Supermarkets used to rely heavily on data and insights on everything from shelf placement to how to market and promote foods from the likes of their CPG partners as well as Nielsen and IRI, to name just a couple. Then "category captains" were created. Usually staffed from the leading CPG brand and headquartered at the retailer’s location, those CPG companies offered retailers insights and recommendations on how to sell more product across the entire category—not just their own brand. Those positions are being eliminated. The source and quality of data has changed. Grocers are relying on their own proprietary research to decide how and where and at what price to place products—their own brands as well as those from CPG.

Traffic to US retail stores has almost entirely vanished due to Covid-19

Article | February 25, 2020

At many malls and retail stores around the US, foot traffic has been in decline for some time. Even so, they’ve never seen anything like this. In a research note sent to clients today, investment firm Cowen and Company estimated total foot traffic to US retailers was down 97.6% for the week through March 27 compared to the same time last year. It has come to a “near complete halt,” Cowen said, following the outbreak of the new coronavirus. Many stores across the country are closed, of course, so shoppers couldn’t visit even if they wanted. Retailers have voluntarily shuttered stores to protect workers and help slow the virus’s spread. Simon Property Group, the largest mall owner in the US, closed its malls through at least the end of March.

How field research can help retailers reach untapped sales opportunities

Article | February 25, 2020

When you think of field research, you might think of an archeologist bent over a dig site investigating civilizations from the past, excavating the terrain and sifting out important artifacts. In marketing, field research is also about the study of the human experience and uncovering those important pieces of knowledge — but as they pertain to your business. Field research can give you insights into your customers' pain points, what they need to solve their problems, their thoughts on how your product helps or even what where they feel your services might be improved.
