CPG companies have been feeling the pain from store brands for close to a decade now. Increased quality, curated offerings and better graphics have all led shoppers to try and in many cases then switch to the store brand offering. The latest salvo in this war is about data. Supermarkets used to rely heavily on data and insights on everything from shelf placement to how to market and promote foods from the likes of their CPG partners as well as Nielsen and IRI, to name just a couple. Then "category captains" were created. Usually staffed from the leading CPG brand and headquartered at the retailer’s location, those CPG companies offered retailers insights and recommendations on how to sell more product across the entire category—not just their own brand. Those positions are being eliminated. The source and quality of data has changed. Grocers are relying on their own proprietary research to decide how and where and at what price to place products—their own brands as well as those from CPG.
Due to the latest technology innovations to hit the market, today's retail environment is changing at an unprecedented rate. From robots that can identify shoppers' purchasing habits to immersive virtual reality experiences and the increased popularity in BOPUS, the shopping experience has dramatically evolved in recent years. Consider this: if the average shopper were to hop into a DeLorean time machine, travel back in time to the early 1990s and shop for a sweater; they wouldn't be able to shop online or through a mobile app. Instead, they'd be forced to drive from store to store, aimlessly perusing through aisles and asking sales associates to check store inventory stock via a paper ledger. That shopper would quickly realize just how big of a difference technology makes in the shopping experience.
Retailers know how important it is to drive customer engagement a business's success depends on customer retention, growth and ultimately sales. As an entrepreneur and the owner of retail jewelry brand Blossom Box Jewelry, I understand first-hand how important and often difficult it is to develop sales and marketing plans and strategies that will resonate with a target audience and provide a competitive advantage over other brands. With markets becoming increasingly saturated, it's crucial to create key differentiators for a business to remain successful. Every industry has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, with governments implementing various measures in a bid to slow the spread of the virus. This means consumers have had to adapt their behaviour, which in turn is reflected within the economy. As many people are furloughed and many stores have had to implement temporary closures, data shows that people are buying less, which has had a direct impact on the retail industry.
