The coronavirus epidemic has so ravaged travel, live entertainment and physical retail that companies across those industries have frozen their marketing, causing ad prices to plunge. Meanwhile, online beauty brand Insert Name Here is generating so much business that it’s snapping up ad space at a discount. Based in Los Angeles, Insert Name Here sells hair extensions and wigs, which are in high demand now that women are unable to visit their hairstylists. To reach all those consumers who are stuck at home, Insert Name Here is working with social media influencers to create do-it-yourself styling videos for Instagram as well as Facebook, Tik Tok, Snapchat and YouTube.
There are 32 million kids under the age of 14 in the U.S. This week, and for who knows how much longer, they will be home from school due to the COVID-19 crisis. But Bill Onderdonk, COO of high-end toy and game company KiwiCo, tells PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster that he thinks he has a solution. “If you want to spend quality time with your kids, they’re great projects for two or three people to do together,” he said. “So that’s sort of the other flip side of this crisis. On a broader scale, parents are concerned about how much time kids are spending in front of screens, whether that’s video games, phones or social media. Our products are a great alternative, because they are engaging and fun for kids.”
Clorox has stopped advertising on Amazon because its products have sold out, with shoppers having rushed to grab any disinfectant wipes available during the coronavirus outbreak. On Wednesday, Clorox confirmed that as stores of its cleaning products dry up online, it has pulled back on advertising—an example of how the COVID-19 pandemic can create ripple effects throughout retail, advertising and beyond. Clorox also is contending with third-party sellers taking its products and selling them for exorbitant prices, part of a gouging spree that has played out online and in stores ever since consumers began hoarding products like disinfectant wipes, toilet paper, food and other goods.
