There are 32 million kids under the age of 14 in the U.S. This week, and for who knows how much longer, they will be home from school due to the COVID-19 crisis. It may sound like a situation that will try the patience of any parent. But Bill Onderdonk, COO of high-end toy and game company KiwiCo, tells PYMNTS CEO Karen Webster that he thinks he has a solution. “If you want to spend quality time with your kids, they’re great projects for two or three people to do together,” he said. “So that’s sort of the other flip side of this crisis. On a broader scale, parents are concerned about how much time kids are spending in front of screens, whether that’s video games, phones or social media. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton today issued a stern warning to retail suppliers, including those who supply grocery stores and pharmacies, that state law strictly prohibits price gouging in the wake of a declared disaster. Price gouging laws apply to any person or entity selling necessities at an exorbitant or excessive price after a disaster has been declared by the Governor or President. This prohibition includes those who supply retailers. Under the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act, any price-gougers may be required to reimburse consumers and may be held liable for civil penalties of up to $10,000 per violation with an additional penalty of up to $250,000 if the affected consumers are elderly.

Manufacturers are facing a retail armageddon and need to find new ways of driving sales direct or squeezing as much as possible through the ecommerce platforms of their partners. Pivoting to a DTC business is not a quick fix and for many brands, their own ecommerce sites are just not fit for purpose or the budgets are not available to drive the qualified traffic through to purchase. That inevitably leaves a greater focus on driving sales through third party ecommerce sites. The ecommerce penetration rates vary massively from sector to sector and while they have been growing strongly, they have to date made up a relatively small percentage of online sales. Traditional retail still contributes significantly to the bulk of all purchases.
