Amazon.com (AMZN.O), the biggest online retailer, said it sold out of many household staples after orders spiked. As the fast-spreading coronavirus continues to alarm consumers across Europe and the United States, Trump held a phone call on Sunday with 30 executives from grocery stores including Amazon.com’s Whole Foods, Target Corp (TGT.N), Costco Wholesale Corp (COST.O) and Walmart Inc (WMT.N). Trump Administration official Larry Kudlow assured television news viewers that U.S. supply lines were “working pretty well.”

Startup Fast raises $20M to streamline e-commerce checkout

Fast, a digital login and checkout company, announced last week that it raised $20 million in Series A funding led by Stripe, with additional participation by Index Ventures and Susa Ventures. The funding will enable the company to introduce Fast Checkout, a one-click purchase product for e-commerce, internationally and to expand its product and engineering teams, the company said in a statement. The company will unveil Fast Checkout, a tool which allows consumers to complete purchases with a single click on any browser, platform or device, "in the coming weeks," per the announcement.

Traffic to US retail stores has almost entirely vanished due to Covid-19

At many malls and retail stores around the US, foot traffic has been in decline for some time. Even so, they’ve never seen anything like this. In a research note sent to clients today, investment firm Cowen and Company estimated total foot traffic to US retailers was down 97.6% for the week through March 27 compared to the same time last year. It has come to a “near complete halt,” Cowen said, following the outbreak of the new coronavirus. Many stores across the country are closed, of course, so shoppers couldn’t visit even if they wanted. Retailers have voluntarily shuttered stores to protect workers and help slow the virus’s spread. Simon Property Group, the largest mall owner in the US, closed its malls through at least the end of March.
