Brick-and-mortar retail is not dead—here’s proof

Depending on whom you ask, brick-and-mortar retail stores are not just on shaky ground, they’re on a precipice of complete oblivion. Honestly, I am exhausted by the constant death knell for retail. I question the statements that I read over and over from economists and journalists who say that brick-and-mortar is done and that we’re moving wholly toward a digital, on-demand retail future. Sure, the retail industry is changing, but I don’t believe for a second that all brick-and-mortar retail is dying. There is still a place for and a need for retail services that help consumers live their daily lives.

Macy's Furloughs Workers, and Other Retail News Related to the COVID-19 Crisis

Retailers are continuing to lay off and furlough workers due to the coronavirus uncertainty. Macy's announced this morning that the majority of employees for the Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and Bluemercury brands will go on furlough beginning this week. U.S. clothing rental firm Rent the Runway also said on Saturday it had laid off retail employees following temporary store closures amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. “Like many businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Rent the Runway has had to make some difficult decisions in the short term to thrive in the long term, which include temporary store closures and retail role eliminations,” a company spokeswoman said in an emailed statement to Reuters. Last week, Everlane laid off and furloughed more than 200 workers, including retail and those operating back-end functions, as it struggles to cope with the shutdown of its retail business over measures to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

Gap is the Latest Retailer to Get Into Resale, Partners With thredUP

Gap is the latest retailer to dip its toes into the secondhand apparel market, following the lead of Macy’s, Nordstrom and others, in a bid to stay relevant in an industry shaken by changing consumer tastes. The company announced last week that it has partnered with resale platform thredUP, which bills itself as the largest online consignment and thrift store. In select Gap, Banana Republic, Athleta, and Janie and Jack stores, thredUP bags and labels will now be available for customers to mail in their clothes, in exchange for credits to use at Gap’s portfolio of stores. Macy’s, J.C. Penney and J.Crew’s Madewell brand have also partnered with thredUP in recent months.
