A new retail bedding survey is being hailed as good news by bedding executives at this week’s High Point Market. Piper Jaffray’s September Mattress Retailer Survey provides an upbeat look at the bedding industry’s prospects. It says the industry enjoyed a “solid” September and notes that retailers see higher sales in the fourth quarter. Bedding leaders gathered in High Point said they are heartened by the positive results in the survey, which reflects a sampling of retail opinions from around the country. “Any good news, or forecasts of good news, is welcomed by an industry that hasn’t had a lot to celebrate of late,” said Gerry Borreggine, CEO of Therapedic International. “However, business has been trending upward since the summer. Retailers are gaining confidence about the immediate future. This suggests good things are in store for U.S. manufacturers and the retail outlets we supply.”

Macy's Furloughs Workers, and Other Retail News Related to the COVID-19 Crisis

Article | March 30, 2020

Retailers are continuing to lay off and furlough workers due to the coronavirus uncertainty. Macy's announced this morning that the majority of employees for the Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and Bluemercury brands will go on furlough beginning this week. U.S. clothing rental firm Rent the Runway also said on Saturday it had laid off retail employees following temporary store closures amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. “Like many businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Rent the Runway has had to make some difficult decisions in the short term to thrive in the long term, which include temporary store closures and retail role eliminations,” a company spokeswoman said in an emailed statement to Reuters. Last week, Everlane laid off and furloughed more than 200 workers, including retail and those operating back-end functions, as it struggles to cope with the shutdown of its retail business over measures to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.

The Retail Industry and the Persistent Digital Threat Landscape

Article | March 17, 2020

In today’s age of digital transformation, retailers have changed the ways in which they interact and engage with consumers — starting with online shopping and e-commerce experience. In order for retail organizations to remain competitive, an omnichannel experience is critical, and with that, retail organizations are relying heavily on websites, mobile apps, online marketplaces, and social media to promote products, sell goods and even provide customer service. As competition to acquire and retain customers continues to increase, many retailers are also expanding their efforts to include social media and digital advertising platforms to enter new markets, generate awareness, and connect with potential customers. However, retailers aren’t the only ones that are targeting the opportunities online and digital platforms offer. Cybercriminals also recognize the opportunities that online platforms represent for retailers, and are seeking to exploit their market share and revenue potential.

Traffic to US retail stores has almost entirely vanished due to Covid-19

Article | April 1, 2020

At many malls and retail stores around the US, foot traffic has been in decline for some time. Even so, they’ve never seen anything like this. In a research note sent to clients today, investment firm Cowen and Company estimated total foot traffic to US retailers was down 97.6% for the week through March 27 compared to the same time last year. It has come to a “near complete halt,” Cowen said, following the outbreak of the new coronavirus. Many stores across the country are closed, of course, so shoppers couldn’t visit even if they wanted. Retailers have voluntarily shuttered stores to protect workers and help slow the virus’s spread. Simon Property Group, the largest mall owner in the US, closed its malls through at least the end of March.

Article | March 22, 2020

Oftentimes, our social media video marketing efforts are weighed down by our own customers for the lack of thoughtful stories that can touch upon them. These are like run-of-the-mill, telling everything that the target viewers are least interested in knowing. And the heavy budgets we utilize to create a ‘so called’ powerful video is usually downcast as a no-brainer. There does exist a gap between what we do and what is expected of us. Whether it is B2B video marketing or B2C video marketing, the underlying objective of filling the gap remains the same.
