Consumers in the Asia-Pacific region have a high level of acceptance of in-app ads and more likely to click through to purchase with shopping apps, according to French ad tech firm Criteo, which surveyed over 3,000 consumers across six Asia-Pacific countries – Australia, India, Indonesia, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand to explore the way consumers use retail and shopping apps. The survey found out that six in ten smartphone users across the region have two to five retail and shopping apps on their devices, with over 90% of the users purchasing at least once a month using retail and shopping apps and 40% of them shopping between two to five times per month. Around 70% of respondents found it is more enjoyable and convenient to shop from retail and shopping apps than mobile websites, while usability is a key factor driving purchasing via shopping apps1.

Google Enjoy Retail store Will take Down Controversial Infowars App

The controversial Infowars app, an outlet of infamous conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, has been taken down from the Google Play Keep for spreading misinformation about COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus. Google confirmed to WIRED that it taken out the application, which had more than 100,000 downloads. The app sold numerous products, contained films and content from Jones, and offered dwell broadcasts of The Alex Jones Display. How is coronavirus impacting the retail industry?

Primark is one of the latest retailers to announce the temporary closure of some of its stores, in a bid to help stop the spread of coronavirus. It has closed outlets in Italy, France, Spain, and Austria (where 30% of its revenue is generated), while its UK and Northern Ireland stores at the time of publication at least remain (perhaps controversially) open. Primark is certainly not the only one to take this kind of action. Global retailers including Glossier, Nike, Urban Outfitters, and Patagonia have all indefinitely shut their stores, purely to help prevent further outbreak. In the majority of cases, employees are being paid for lost shifts. At the same time, retailers have also updated working policies to help ease the strain on staff. Starbucks, for example, has announced that it is implementing ‘catastrophe pay’ to US employees, meaning that it will now pay staff for up to 14 days if they have been diagnosed or in close contact with someone who has coronavirus.

Macy's Furloughs Workers, and Other Retail News Related to the COVID-19 Crisis

Retailers are continuing to lay off and furlough workers due to the coronavirus uncertainty. Macy's announced this morning that the majority of employees for the Macy’s, Bloomingdales, and Bluemercury brands will go on furlough beginning this week. U.S. clothing rental firm Rent the Runway also said on Saturday it had laid off retail employees following temporary store closures amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak. “Like many businesses affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Rent the Runway has had to make some difficult decisions in the short term to thrive in the long term, which include temporary store closures and retail role eliminations,” a company spokeswoman said in an emailed statement to Reuters. Last week, Everlane laid off and furloughed more than 200 workers, including retail and those operating back-end functions, as it struggles to cope with the shutdown of its retail business over measures to reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
