Retailers have long known POS systems have become a tech problem looking for a solution – massive, expensive and difficult to upgrade. As the store’s essential workhorse application, POS has added so many functions and capabilities over the years that it became an unwieldy, monolithic, complex structure that defied simplification and streamlined management.As a result, it is not surprising to learn that retail IT departments have begun searching for an entirely new approach to POS that offers a pathway to solve these massive and costly problems. This is the subject of the recent RIS Targeted Research report, “Evolution of the Next-Gen POS.” One of the major findings in the study is that there is an unprecedented level of POS investment and upgrade and implementation activity taking place today and scheduled for the next two years.

What the coronavirus means for DTC brands

In the past several weeks, over 100 retailers both legacy and DTC have temporarily shuttered their doors or reduced hours to help stop the spread of the coronavirus. For digitally native brands, which operate few stores relative to more traditional players, the move to operating exclusively online, in theory, should have come with little disruption to business. But that hasn't been the case. Online spending at ThirdLove during the week of March 16 fell 39% week over week, while Poshmark fell 30% and StitchFix fell 9% during that same period, according to Edison Trends data shared with Retail Dive. As a whole, direct-to-consumer brand week-over-week spending fell 7% on average between March 2 and March 22. Comparatively, the average week-over-week increase for these brands from Jan. 6 to March 1 was 1%, according to the data.

What are the biggest barriers to AI adoption for retailers?

According to KPMG’s “Living in an AI World 2020 Report,” retailers have some optimism, some skepticism and some pessimism about how artificial intelligence (AI) will impact the industry. The study explored how 751 insiders across five industries, including retail, view the future of AI in their sectors. On the downside, 64 percent of retail insiders agreed that the use of AI to help businesses is more hype than reality right now. The study also identified numerous challenges retailers believe they face in capitalizing on AI’s potential: AI readiness: Just 43 percent of retail respondents believe their employees are prepared for AI adoption. Relatedly, only 52 percent say their companies offer any type of AI training.
